Art Creative Showcase: Exploration of Sports
Posted June 5, 2024 By Sacha Guppy
This year, our art curriculum has engaged students in an in-depth exploration of sports through the lens of visual art. By studying works of artists such as Keith Haring, Burton Bradstock, and Elisabeth Frink, pupils have critically examined how art can capture and convey the dynamic essence of athleticism.
Our showcase presents a diverse array of projects, demonstrating a range of artistic techniques and conceptual investigations:
Tonal Portraits: These works explore the interplay of light and shadow to depict the intensity and emotion of athletes, enhancing students’ understanding of tonal variation and facial anatomy.
Charcoal Observational Drawings: Students have developed their skills in capturing movement and form through the study of wooden mannequins, emphasizing the importance of proportion and composition.
Collaborative Olympic-Inspired Pieces: This Creative showcase highlights the collaborative process. Students worked together to create pieces that embody the ideals of the Olympic Games, fostering a sense of unity and teamwork.
Modroc Sports Figures: Each student chose a sport to represent with their figure, thoughtfully considering pose, proportion, and shape. Utilising wire, foil, and Modroc, they sculpted their figures, which were then mounted on wooden bases. This project allowed students to engage deeply with three-dimensional art forms and the physicality of sports.
UV-Sensitive Artworks: By experimenting with UV-reactive materials, students have pushed the boundaries of traditional art forms, integrating elements of contemporary and experimental art practices.
Integrating sports into the art curriculum underscores the shared attributes of both disciplines, such as hand-eye coordination, dedication, and rigorous practice. Furthermore, this thematic approach emphasises the holistic benefits of art and sports, contributing to students’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the culmination of our student’s academic and creative endeavours, showcasing their dedication, intellectual growth, and artistic achievements for the year.
